What is Wet Shaving?
As noted, wet shaving starts by using warm water to wash your face in prep for a shave. It also includes an entire traditional shaving experience where a sharp razor is run along the skin to slice off the hair in one stroke. A wet shaving set would include shaving soap to lather your face and a cartridge razor, be it single or multi-blade.
A wet shaving kit normally comes with a full set of supplies. This includes a shaving brush, a bar of soap, a razor, and some lathering cream. Each razor is unique in its own way. Some of the most popular forms include cutthroat razors, double-edged razors, and others that have three or five edges.
Benefits of Wet Shaving:
Professionals recommend wet shaving for a smoother finish and fewer complications like bumps, ingrown hairs, and irritation. Many men mistake product-related issues for sensitive skin. Most shaving problems arise from poor-quality kits and improper technique. With the right tools and proper methods, wet shaving becomes gentler, faster, and more effective.
The economy often goes unnoticed when considering shaving razors. While the initial purchase of a traditional wet shaving safety razor, shaving brush, and soap is slightly higher than an average disposable razor, the long-term savings are notable. Cartridge blades for safety razors are substantially cheaper, and shaving soaps last much longer than gels and foams.
Shaving enthusiasts appreciate traditional wet shaving for its aesthetic qualities. Shaving sets help add an elegant touch to the sink and the bathroom in general which helps enhance the beauty of the places they are put in.
Most notably, countless men who have shifted from modern razors to traditional ones have noted that the act of shaving turns from a chore into a joyful task: shaving with quality products feels more lavish. It enhances the experience while still providing better results.
As a consequence, you shall enjoy superior results in terms of the quality of the shave and the degree of skin irritation, and shaving transforms from a mundane morning ritual to a lively experience.
How to Wet Shave
Shaving one's beard wet requires practice, and it is definitely an art. Here's a simple yet effective guide on how to wet shave your face the professional way:
Pre-shave practice
Doing a pre-shave routine is the essential step towards achieving the most comfortable wet shave. A pre-shave application does multiple tasks: opens your pores and softens the facial hair. Here’s what you need to do:
Clean your face
After taking a shower, that is the ideal moment to start preparing for your shave because your skin will already be warm, and you will have a clean face. Alternatively, you may also wash your face with warm water. Warm water is useful when it comes to opening pores and removing grease from your skin.
Apply shaving soap & rinse your shaving brush
The best method of applying a soap shave is because it lacks the alcohol preservatives present in foams and gels. Putting on a gentle but thick lather of soap should be done on the face.
After rubbing the soap, you should rinse the brush in a cup of warm water for a few seconds. Next, you can rub the brush on the face so that a rich lather may build.
The Shaving Process
Get your razor ready:
Not only should your face be clean and warm, but your razor should also be clean. Warm it under hot water for 15–20 seconds to help it glide smoothly across your skin.
Shave following the hair growth
Glide your razor with the direction of hair growth, not against it. Make short strokes following your hair’s direction. This ensures a smooth shave and reduces the risk of rashes or cuts.
Go with a light touch
Men often apply too much pressure when shaving, which can cause redness and irritation. Traditional razors work best when glided gently across a flat surface. Let the razor do the work—shave softly!
After Shave Care
Once done, your skin will be smooth, but a few post-shave steps are essential to prevent irritation:
Gently pat your face dry with a soft towel. Rinse your face with cold water to close the pores.
Apply aftershave balm
Using an aftershave balm or cream is much better than sprays, which can sting and irritate the skin. A balm soothes and rehydrates. Rub it in gently in circular motions—don’t overapply.
